Chapter Fourteen

Abigail

Basil lit her world with his smile and conversation.

“Can we meet at Starbucks tomorrow morning, say, about this same time?” Basil stood beside the bench just before the cathedral’s iron gates.

So sweet to walk me here.

She agreed and missed the sound of his voice the second they parted ways. But she had to get back to the infirmary. Any moment, Tegra could pull through. She wanted to be there.

When she reached the room, Governess Woods was on her way out.

“How is she?”

Governess looked tight lipped. Then again, she always did. “She’s going to be fine. The better question is, how are you? You’ve been up here with Tegra from the start.”

Abby leaned her weight to one leg. At the governess’s words, the weariness caught up to her. “Fine,” she answered. “Can I go in?”

Woods shook her head. “She must have landed on something that broke through her healing mark. That’s why she was in such a terrible state. The twins are in right now working on her.”

“I should be in there, like she was with me. She needs me.”

“Abby, she needs you healthy. Not laid out on the floor from fatigue. I’ll notify you when they’ve finished. Go to the cafeteria. Eat, I say. Thicken up.”

Abby knew the governess was right, but that didn’t make leaving again feel any less like abandoning Tegra. Then she remembered the e-reader clutched in her hand. “Governess, here. Thank you for letting me borrow it.”

Governess Woods waved it away. “You keep it. Your mother mentioned you had a penchant for books. Figured it would be the only way I could pry you from Tegra’s side so you could get a breath of fresh air.”

Abby fought but lost to the giggle that erupted.

“What did you do with your time, young lady?”

Uh…can’t tell her the truth. Well, in a way, I can.

“Got a cappuccino.” Abby reached up and clasped her fingers around her charm. It’s not a lie, at least.

“Good, good. Now go. I’ll be in touch.”

Abby scrambled downstairs. The moment she hit the cafeteria door, saliva filled her mouth. The smells stoked her hunger until a pang growled. Yet, her nerves curdled it all into a nauseating wave.

Okay. No food.

She trudged back to her room. Pacing back and forth. See-sawing between thoughts of Basil then Tegra. Both filled her with unfamiliar emotions of concern, anxiousness and a need. A need to see Basil again and a need to make sure Tegra was all right.

Before she worked a groove into the carpet, she grabbed Tegra’s favorite CD. It quickly became one of Abby’s faves as well. She skipped tracks until she got to Linkin Park’s “Somewhere I Belong.” Flopping on her bed, she turned her charm around in her fingers, listening to the words. More than anything, she felt like they were speaking to her, like they’d taken a peek into her life and put words to music, expressing her own thoughts and fears.

Just when sleep overtook her, a heavy thunk jerked her half-awake. The door crept open to a hand’s width.
